MB-trac Models (1972-1991)
The MB-trac was one of the most innovative agricultural tractors ever produced in Europe. Conceived by Mercedes-Benz as a natural extension of the Unimog concept, it applied portal axle technology to a full-scale agricultural tractor, giving farmers a machine with exceptional ground clearance, genuine all-wheel drive, and the ability to carry implements both in front and behind. From 1972 to 1991, the MB-trac was manufactured at the Gaggenau plant alongside the Unimog.
Three generations defined the MB-trac story. The first generation, the 440 series (1972-1980), established the concept with 65 to 95 hp diesel engines and proved that portal axle tractors could be practical farming tools. The second generation, the 441 series (1980-1987), brought more power and improved ergonomics. The third and final generation, the 442 and 443 series (1987-1991), pushed output up to 300 hp in the most powerful versions, making the MB-trac one of the strongest agricultural tractors of its era.
Mercedes-Benz ultimately discontinued the MB-trac in 1991, choosing to focus on the Unimog and commercial truck ranges. The decision was commercial rather than technical: the MB-trac was technically excellent but competed in a crowded market dominated by specialist tractor manufacturers. Today, MB-trac models are highly sought after by collectors and farmers who value their robustness and the quality of Mercedes-Benz engineering.
