The Unimog in Winter Service

When roads cannot wait

An icy road at 3 in the morning, a snowstorm that brings a town to a standstill, a cycle path blocked by ice that stops hundreds of commuters: winter service is a race against time where every minute of delay has direct consequences for safety. The Unimog is built to respond to that urgency in any conditions.

Available round the clock, operational in extreme temperatures, capable of switching from one attachment to another in under an hour: the Unimog is the most versatile winter service vehicle on the market, used by thousands of municipalities, road managers and airports around the world.

Snow ploughs: three configurations for three situations

The straight-blade front plough handles light to moderate snowfall efficiently on wide carriageways. The V-blade is the better choice for first passes on heavily snow-covered roads, pushing snow to both sides simultaneously. The side plough completes the setup for narrow streets, cycle paths and car parks, pushing snow to one side without blocking the central lane.

With a clearing width of up to 3,600 mm depending on configuration, a single pass is often enough to reopen a two-way road.

Spreading: precision and salt economy

The wet spreader treats the road surface with pre-wetted brine salt (FS30), a technique that cuts salt consumption by up to 40% compared with traditional dry spreading. Dosage is automatically adjusted to the vehicle’s speed, ensuring an even distribution regardless of pace.

Dry spreading remains essential on mountain roads and wind-exposed areas where wet salt does not adhere well enough. The adjustable spreading width of up to 12 metres allows fast roads and large open areas to be treated in a single pass.

Snow blower: for extreme situations

When snow accumulates beyond what ploughs can handle, the snow blower takes over. It shreds and throws the densest accumulations up to 25 metres away, clearing mountain passes, forest roads and airport runways even after heavy falls. The Unimog, thanks to its four-wheel drive and differential locks, pushes through these conditions where conventional vehicles stop.

Off-season profitability: winter service is just one use

The great strength of the Unimog in winter service is that it is not condemned to sit in a garage for eight months a year. The same week in March that sees snow clearing operations wind down can see the Unimog return to its role as a verge mower, road sweeper or agricultural implement carrier. The modular system guarantees maximum return on investment across the entire year.
