The 402 series introduced the new long wheelbase of 2,120 mm, which made the Unimog progressively better suited to civilian applications from 1953 onwards.
For example, the vehicle was also available as a flatbed truck with a fifth-wheel coupling.
The U402 received a closed cab produced by Westfalia. Thanks to its protruding headlights, it quickly earned the nickname “frog eyes”. The enclosed cab was intended to help the Unimog gain ground in industry and municipal services, since uptake in agriculture and forestry had not reached the levels originally hoped for.
The engine and drivetrain were carried over unchanged from the predecessor. With 25 hp under the hood, the vehicle could reach 50 km/h, which was a significant advantage over the tractors of the era. The range of attachments grew steadily, and Unimogs were taking on an ever-wider variety of specialist tasks. Special-purpose accessories, including equipment for fire services, were also made available.
