The Unimog in Green Space Maintenance

Green space maintenance: a permanent task

Municipalities, road managers and landscaping companies manage thousands of hectares of green spaces that require regular upkeep throughout the year. Verges, parks, riverbanks, embankments, hedges, tree-lined avenues: each space has its own specific constraints in terms of access, terrain and equipment.

The Unimog addresses that diversity with a single vehicle capable of switching implement in minutes. That versatility argument is what has led many municipalities and regions to standardise their green space vehicle fleets around the Unimog.

Verge mowing: reach and precision

The Unimog’s lateral mowing arm reaches up to 6 metres, allowing verges, ditches and embankments to be mowed without leaving the carriageway. The driver stays on the road while the arm works at full offset, keeping both operator and passing motorists safe. The rotary or flail cutting head adapts to fine grass as easily as to scrub and reeds.

On steep road-side slopes, the Unimog’s stability on cambered ground is decisive: where an agricultural tractor would risk tipping over, the Unimog holds its position thanks to its portal axles and independently working suspension.

Hedge trimming and pruning

The hydraulic tool arm fitted with a hedge cutter handles hedges along national roads, cycle paths and municipal properties. The 6-metre reach allows the upper sections to be cut without a separate platform, and the Unimog’s hydraulic flow feeds even the widest cutting bars without difficulty.

For larger trees, the stump grinder removes stumps below ground level, and the hydraulic pruning shear cuts branches up to 15 cm in diameter in a single motion.

Spring through autumn: an unbroken tool cycle

The green space maintenance calendar flows naturally with the Unimog’s modular system:

  • Spring: thermal or mechanical weed control, lawn scarification, planting
  • Summer: regular mowing of verges and parks, watering new plantings
  • Autumn: leaf collection by suction or blowing, green waste shredding
  • Winter: snow clearing and spreading, ditch and bank maintenance

A single Unimog covers this entire cycle. The panoramic, ergonomic and sound-insulated cab allows the driver to work long days without excessive fatigue, which is decisive for teams moving from one field assignment to the next throughout the season.
