The Unimog in Police and Defence

A military history that began in the 1950s

The Unimog series 404 S, produced from 1955 to 1980 in more than 64,000 units, is one of the most widely deployed military vehicles in history. Powered by a six-cylinder petrol engine producing 82 to 110 hp, rugged, easy to maintain and capable of crossing obstacles that conventional trucks cannot handle, it equipped the Bundeswehr and numerous allied armies for decades.

That tradition continues today with the 437 and U5023 generations, regularly selected by armed forces and security services for their extreme off-road capability and their modular architecture that can be adapted to any mission.

Off-road capability without equal

The Unimog U5023, the current extreme off-road version, climbs slopes of up to 43 degrees, fords water up to 1,200 mm deep and has a ground clearance of 486 mm. These figures are not marketing claims: they are certified and reproducible in any climatic conditions, from the Arctic to the Saharan desert.

The low centre of gravity, exceptional suspension travel and portal axles allow stable progress over terrain that light armoured vehicles can only traverse with difficulty.

A platform for every mission

The Unimog’s modular design is particularly valuable for military operations, where requirements vary radically from one mission to the next. The same chassis can be fitted with:

  • A double cab for transporting eight soldiers with full kit
  • A mobile command post, insulated and air-conditioned, with satellite communication systems
  • A field ambulance with trauma care equipment
  • A communications centre with radio, satellite and data links
  • A rapid-load logistics platform for containers and pallets

This interchangeability dramatically reduces logistical requirements: a fleet of identical Unimogs can cover very different roles simply by swapping superstructures.

Police and crisis management

For police and gendarmerie units, the Unimog responds to crisis situations that require access over difficult terrain: floods, avalanches, forest areas unreachable by standard vehicles. Its unfailing reliability under extreme conditions makes it a natural choice for specialist units that cannot afford a breakdown at the wrong moment.
