The Unimog: an indispensable tool in construction

Created just after World War II by inventor Albert Friedrich and significantly improved by his successor Heinrich Rößle, the Unimog was first and foremost designed for agricultural use. Over the years, its applications expanded into several major fields: military (although the creators were against this idea), construction, and leisure. Its remarkable ability to move across any type of terrain makes the Unimog an undeniable asset. Today, the best-known models are the Unimog U402 and U502.

The key to success in construction

Construction companies generally need equipment powerful enough to complete the various tasks assigned to them. The Mercedes Group is well aware of this, which is why it chose to market the Unimog in several models, all capable of carrying out the tasks assigned to them. In construction, for example, it is used as a transporter of heavy equipment and, optionally, personnel, thanks to its optional extended cab. Alternatively, it can be fitted with any tools that might be useful on a job site, such as a backhoe or a front loader.

The many useful applications of the Unimog

Today, and for several decades now, it has become the indispensable tool in construction. A vehicle that has never been equalled in terms of performance and that has brought great satisfaction to thousands of building contractors.

1) Transporting construction equipment

Thanks to its power and efficiency, the Unimog is a concentration of technology that meets every challenge in construction and civil engineering.

Indeed, one of the key challenges on construction sites is often moving bulky machinery. An excavator alone weighs several tonnes, which can be quite difficult to move from point A to point B. This task, however, is straightforward for the Unimog, which is equipped with a 4-cylinder engine producing 231 hp.

2) The Swiss Army knife for contractors

The Unimog has everything going for it. In any case, it is the undisputed champion of versatile construction equipment. As mentioned earlier, thanks to the full optimisation of its chassis, the Unimog can receive and transport tonnes of tools wherever the contractor wishes, but it can also act as a fully fledged construction machine for every stage and action of a build: digging, clearing, hauling, lifting…

This saves time but also money, sparing construction companies from having to use too many different machines. Another significant advantage: the Unimog is exempt from the traffic restrictions that other construction vehicles typically face.

One final important point: Mercedes-Benz offers, as an option, an aerial work platform for carrying out work at height, always in complete safety.

3) Extraordinary uses

Even if it may seem surprising, the Unimog serves as a traction unit for hauling very heavy trailers, such as construction rubble to be removed, but also for transporting oversized attractions from one city to another, such as large Ferris wheels.

Another remarkable fact: did you know that the Unimog is used by airports around the world to tow airliners?

Finally, it remains active in mining operations, such as at Gold Bridge in British Columbia, Canada, even if this activity is tending to decline for obvious environmental reasons.

The tireless Unimog for construction

It is quite straightforward to conclude that the Unimog adapts to every situation and comes out on top in every challenge thrown at it. It represents an unusual alliance between modern technology and the seasoned experience of the German brand Mercedes-Benz. A faithful companion, always ready to roll up its sleeves, the Unimog is far from fading into obscurity. An essential tool across Europe and around the world, it has not finished surprising you.
