The Unimog was also produced in an exclusive Black Edition. This Unimog U500 Black Edition made its debut at the Dubai Motor Show in December 2005. The target audience for this prestigious vehicle is quite different from other series 405 buyers. It is designed as a premium vehicle for travel in desert regions, for example, as well as a mega leisure vehicle for individualists who want something that goes far beyond the fashionable SUVs found everywhere. With a permissible trailer weight well into double figures, many yachts can be towed with ease. And the Sunday driving ban that applies to trucks does not apply to a U500 either, despite a possible maximum gross weight of 16 tonnes.
The U500 Black Edition is a vehicle of superlatives: tuner Brabus designed a particularly elegant silhouette, whose distinguishing features are a platform with integrated side panels, a silver bumper with a futuristic glossy appearance, and a stainless steel roll bar. Needless to say, a chromed exhaust stack in the style of American trucks is also present. Inside, the Unimog Black Edition treats occupants to a 16-piece carbon interior, Alcantara trim on the headliner and window pillars, and seats with putty-coloured leather upholstery. Velvet covers the footwell, while the pedals are in aluminium. The steering column is operated via a black leather steering wheel. Inside, the Black Edition also presents itself as an equipment carrier of a special kind: in terms of entertainment and information electronics, it offers, among other things, the S-Class COMMAND system, which can be used with a 6.5-inch screen, DVD navigation, a CD changer, and a specially developed compass function.
